For three quarters of "Havoc", this is the sense of disappointment that will fill the runtime. This opening track plods along at a snail's pace, barely scraping an inoffensive volume, never climaxing. I don't care if Michael's voice sounds polished and smooth (doesn't it always?), I've forgotten it already. Hear that opening? That lifeless guitar tone which instills zero power the simplistic rhythm the lack of layered texture. This song quite helpfully sums up the majority of the album. All becomes clear right from the get-go: first track "The Weight". Can't wait to hear the memorable choruses the cleverly irregular fretwork or the elaborate song structures the Norwegians are known for? Tough! They are severely lacking. It appears the band have taken the softer, more AOR-inspired moments from "Nine", such as "Reach Within", and simply vamped up the volume, dulled down the complexity, to create a radio rock album worthy of 311 or Alkaline Trio on a good day. It's a cool album title (for a thrash band maybe), but the 'havoc' caused within the fans' community has had a lasting affect since this album's release.
